Given the premium price that closers go for and how cheap elite MR go for, is this an advisable strategy?

I've never officially punted saves, but I've had drafts where I don't worry about them since they are one of the easier stats to find during the season. For most other categories. if you punt them, you're likely not going to find enough of them during the year.

that was along the lines of what i was thinking, draft a few high K elite set up men who could take over (melancon, clippard, brothers, santos) for $1 each and then keep an eye on the wire and look to add saves

Roto or h2h? And it could depend a bit on your league, as well. I'm in a range of leagues, some where I can safely assume I'll be able to grab SV off the wire, and some where I know for certain that other managers are likely to beat me to the punch. But agreed that one thing we do know is that they will be available over the course of the season.

Seems like there's always a few managers who will trade and overpay for saves too, so getting in on the closer run can be an ok thing if you're good at poaching the wire and then can move a more established guy for something else.

Use Net Saves/Holds as your scoring category and you won't have to worry about that run on closers that invariably occurs in traditional 5x5 leagues.
