I'm in a h2h keeper league with standard 5x5 scoring. I've got to submit my six keepers by Friday. Thanks for chiming in with advice.

Rules:

- Up to six keepers, each player moves up two draft rounds per season.

- Only one player can be kept in rounds 1 through 3.

Here are my options:

  • Andrew McCutchen   - Round 1
  • Jose Altuve                - Round 3
  • Cole Hammels           - Round 5
  • Victor Martinez           - Round 7
  • Edwin Encarnacion    - Round 8
  • Michael Brantley        - Round 12
  • Freddie Freeman       - Round 13
  • Corey Kluber              - Round 13
  • Bryce Harper              - Round 14
  • Javier Baez                - Round 21
  • Anthony Rendon        - Round 22
  • Sean Doolittle             - Round 23
  • Mark Melancon           - Round 23
  • Addison Russel          - Round 23
  • Miguel Sano               - Round 23
  • Danny Santana          - Round 23

Are these rounds for this year? In other words, would Altuve be a 1st or 3rd this year?

Yes, all the rounds are for this coming season.

Obviously, there's more than 6 worth keeping, but here's my list:

* Edwin Encarnacion    - Round 8
* Michael Brantley        - Round 12
* Freddie Freeman       - Round 13
* Corey Kluber              - Round 13
* Bryce Harper              - Round 14
* Anthony Rendon        - Round 22

Sano, Martinez, Altuve, and your closers are appealing too. What's the current thinking?

I'm almost certainly going with Brantely, Kluber, Harper and Rendon (I didn't want to bias anyone's fist opinion). I was looking at deciding between one of EE and Freedman and maybe going with McCutchen because I'll be drafting somewhere in the second half of the first round. Martinez's age/knee scares me and I'm really tempted by the prospects.

In short, I'm still undecided on the last two slots.

@kslight, If you have a moment, I'd be interested to know your thinking with regards to taking a guy like Altuve (or even Sano) over McCutchen. Would you chalk it up to round value (first vs third this season)? Also, even though Freeman is a young player, I'm reluctant to keep him given his power shortage relative to his position (not to mention a weakened Braves roster).

Anyone else have an opinion on how to fill out my last keeper slot?

Assuming I go with these five:

* Edwin Encarnacion    - Round 8
* Michael Brantley        - Round 12
* Corey Kluber              - Round 13
* Bryce Harper              - Round 14
* Anthony Rendon        - Round 22

FWIW, I picked the same six as kslight before I saw his reply. Freeman is a solid choice with that middle round pick. In Round 13, he has more draft value than Cutch or Altuve and is more proven/reliable than your younger late round choices. I generally stay away from closers in longer-term keeper leagues because they usually won't be keeper-worthy for more than a couple of years.

May I throw my conundrum into the mix? 13 hitters/9 pitchers play per week, 12 team league. SB are worth 2 points so fast guys with a high BA tend to be very valuable. I can keep only TWO :(

Gerrit Cole $1

Lance Lynn $3

Taijuan Walker $1

Mookie Betts $1

Joc Pederson $1

Billy Hamilton $11

Looking at your settings, I would go with Cole and Betts.  Cole is the #17 pitcher, and Betts the #25 hitter.  Both have upside and are young.  Who else of the group were you thinking?

I live in LA, so my heart wants to keep Pederson. Also, Taijuan's 18 scoreless innings in spring? For $1? My brain says Cole and Lynn. My heart says Pederson and Taijuan (biggest upside)

Aight I'll go Betts and Cole. Solid with some upside. I'll try to bid on Pederson and Taijuan

Ended up getting the 9th pick out of 12, does this change anyones calculus with regards to letting McCutchen go?

I'm not sure I'd let McCutchen go. I can't imagine any scenario where you get a better player than him at the 9th pick in the first round.

I definitely won't, but is that offset by the value a guy like Freeman offers in round 13 this year (11 next).

I think the original six are your best bet.  You will still have two OF keepers, and I assume you'll also get a very good player in the first.
