The Astros took Aiken 1 overall. now they decide not to sign him or Nix or marshall. They get the 2 pick overall next year but losing a year from their top pick, after 2012 top pick Correa is out all year is not good. On the bright side they have Appel healthy and supposedly pitching. Bad teams tend to stay bad for the same reasons they got bad. I am sure the Astros have fans and I am sure both of them are sad.

I could be wrong but I thought I read Aiken had some unexpected health concerns. I wonder if that played a part in it

At first it appeared it was just a hardball move. Need 1.5 million to sign Nix behold drop Aiken from 6.5 to 5 million. Then they dropped his offer again to fit marshall in also. Apparently Aiken's elbow has a real issue or the Astros would not have sacrificed all 3 picks. The lesson is check the guy out before the draft. Not sure what Aiken will or can do. Go Juco or UCLA seems his options.

I thought that baseball had limits to how much testing you could do on players pre draft? Am I incorrect I thought this was more of an issue with how the baseball draft operates than with how the Astros operate.

If I had the 1 pick I would sure as heck know a lot about him. And not just let his agent blow sunshine up my wazoo. The whole point of the 1 pick is to get ur future started now. But the astros get the 2 pick next year plus their own high pick next year to start their future. They lost a year plus they lost 3 players. Unless Aiken blows his arm out in Juco to reenter draft next year, or goes to UCLA for 3 years then Astros wasted an opportunity. Apparently the Astros are so concerned with the width of his ligament they sacrificed all 3 players. To me the Astros big mistake was in dropping his agreed upon offer just enuff to sign Nix then dropped again just enuff to sign Marshall. Gotta love the agent not taking their phone calls the final day that took real balls.

Yea I just think it's hard when the MLB forbids teams from doing medical exams or doing MRIs on players until after they are drafted. If the Astros medical team checked him out and said the arm is a major risk I don't blame them for not signing him. And there is no way for them to gain that knowledge until after the player is drafted with the current construct of the draft and its rules.
