In one of my leagues, most closers and some heir apparents are locked up. I need another one and wonder whether burning a No. 1 waiver priority on Andrew Bailey is the right call. Other availables are James Russell, Edward Mujica, and Mike Dunn. 0% Agree (0 votes) |
Bailey is very good speculation at this point, given Hanrahan's injury and ineffectiveness. Whether or not you should use No.1 on him depends on what you anticipate being available via waivers moving forward. SV come up on the wire very often over the course of the season, and we're just getting started here. I'd rank Mujica second of those options, and he certainly should be rostered if you need to speculate on SV.

I am in the same position, scrambling for closers. I would vote not to burn the waiver priority on Bailey. Pick up Mujica, who St. Louis just said they'll likely try at closer. Bailey is great but doesn't have the job yet, and blew the save today. You'll have other opportunities to pick up closers, and will kick yourself is a great hitter/sp hits waivers. I have Bailey, Mujica and Herrera on my team.
If you have another spot, might as well pick up Russell as well. And Bailey may clear waivers anyway.

Yeah, if I thought Bailey would keep the job for a while, he'd be more than worth burning the priority. I guess it depends on how much faith I have in Hanrahan keeping the closer gig once he gets back.

After he was dropped, I picked up Axford on speculation that he'll be back as Closer before too long. I can also pick up Kyuji Fujikawa while on DL. Both have been awful, but Fujikawa should come back from DL as a lower rated Closer, while Axford, though not a Closer now, was told that the job is his again once he works things out, and he's higher rated.
I only have room for one. Which way should I go?
A) Keep Axford and wait.
B) Drop Axford and pick up Fujikawa
C) Get rid of Axford, grab a starter, and keep my eyes open for another Closer?
Other Closers on my roster are Sergio Romo and Steve Chisek (for the no score Marlins).

Is that h2h? I'd likely punt SV if that is the case.
As for Axford vs Fujikawa: I'd call Fujikawa's job safer, as in he is THE closer for CHC, but the injury is a cloud over that right now. There are no guarantees that Axford will sort out his problems, but he'll be back in the 9th-inning role if he can.
0% Agree (0 votes) |
Yes, it's h2h.
So Matt, you think I should drop Axford, and pick up another starter, simply sticking with Romo and Cishek as my 2 Relievers/Closers?
That's what I was doing until the opportunity to pick up Axford and Fujikawa came along.
0% Agree (0 votes) |
Axford's elite K/9 makes him more interesting for those settings, no question. I guess I'd stay the course with him. Rostering 10 or 11 SP seems like madness to me, but it would depend on how the rest of your league is addressing it.
0% Agree (0 votes) |
OK, will do that unless a quality Closer (in the job) becomes available, or unless Axford is not working things out. He pitched a good inning the other night,, so that was encouraging. You've projected me # 1 in my league by far. Thanks so much for your assistance. I try to follow your advice to a T.
