I figure he will pick up some saves early on, but are people like Melancon or Benoit, or even streaming a better use of the slot until Minor is healthy?

Frankly, I'd take the SV for now in a 5x5 league. If anything, Hawkins could have some trade value if he is effective early and there are teams in your league that need SV in a bad way.
