So I am picking up a keeper team in a league with some friends. You get to keep any 5 players from your roster, no penalties. 10 team, 5x5 w/ OBP replacing AVG and QS replacing Wins. 4 RP, 4 SP 1 P. Next year everything will refresh from the start, but this year I am at a big disadv. Most other teams have 5 top-30 guys, I don't. I have the number 1 pick though. Top choices in draft are: Holliday, Bumgarner, Zimmerman, Kulber, Dozier and then basically Cueto and down. By ADP, it's possible Holliday could get to me on the way back. Bum is clearly ranked highest by ADP. Dozier easily has most positional worth. Who would you take? You think there's a best strategy other than "wait for next year." 10 Teams | 13 Hitters Per Team [5 Active = HR RBI SB R OBP] | 9 Pitchers Per Team [5 Active = SV ERA WHIP SO QS] 0% Agree (0 votes) |
I play in an OBP league too....I HIGHLY recommend punting power(HR, RBI) & focus solely on speed categories(SB,OBP,R) & load up on pitching...Reason I recommend that is speed guys are easy to find on waivers or later in the draft...so it's easy to build a dominant team by focusing on pitching early & middle of the draft and get non power punt players later. Look at my team as example. PUNT value of 5.16 against a NON PUNT value of what would have been 0.26...I will reiterate the only way you can make this work is if you have a dominant pitching staff because giving up two offensive categories means you have to win 4 or 5 pitching cats each week. It's totally doable if you load up on pitching early. 10 Teams | 14 Hitters Per Team $130 Per Team [4 Active = H SB R OBP, 2 Punted = HR RBI] | 16 Pitchers Per Team $70 Per Team [6 Active = W SV ERA WHIP SO QS] 1 | 7 | 3 | 1.35 | 1.35 | 0.00 | Max Scherzer | | WAS | SP | 34 | | 227.8 | 183 | 75 | 69 | 62 | 249 | 19 | 2.71 | 17 | 0 | 1.07 | 25 | 1.69 | -0.50 | 1.84 | 1.62 | 2.27 | 1.17 | 2 | 16 | 9 | 1.00 | 1.00 | 0.00 | Jordan Zimmermann | | WAS | SP | 34 | | 221.0 | 200 | 77 | 70 | 38 | 187 | 17 | 2.87 | 17 | 0 | 1.08 | 24 | 1.59 | -0.50 | 1.33 | 1.52 | 0.98 | 1.09 | 4 | 40 | 15 | 0.60 | 0.60 | 0.00 | Gerrit Cole | | PIT | SP | 32 | | 200.3 | 186 | 70 | 65 | 54 | 186 | 14 | 2.91 | 15 | 0 | 1.20 | 23 | 1.05 | -0.50 | 1.09 | 0.05 | 0.96 | 0.95 | 6 | 57 | 23 | 0.47 | 0.47 | 0.00 | Sonny Gray | | OAK | SP | 32 | | 213.2 | 180 | 82 | 75 | 70 | 189 | 15 | 3.18 | 13 | 0 | 1.17 | 22 | 0.72 | -0.50 | 0.41 | 0.36 | 1.02 | 0.82 | 7 | 67 | 31 | 0.38 | 0.38 | 0.00 | Collin McHugh | | HOU | SP | 32 | | 193.8 | 173 | 77 | 70 | 53 | 174 | 17 | 3.27 | 13 | 0 | 1.17 | 22 | 0.72 | -0.50 | 0.16 | 0.39 | 0.71 | 0.78 | 10 | 93 | 40 | 0.21 | 0.21 | 0.00 | Kyle Hendricks | | CHC | SP | 39 | | 168.6 | 152 | 62 | 57 | 32 | 98 | 8 | 3.06 | 13 | 0 | 1.09 | 19 | 0.52 | -0.50 | 0.60 | 1.01 | -0.88 | 0.50 | 10 | 97 | 42 | 0.19 | 0.19 | 0.00 | Chris Archer | | TB | SP | 32 | | 190.6 | 164 | 79 | 73 | 65 | 167 | 16 | 3.44 | 13 | 0 | 1.20 | 21 | 0.57 | -0.50 | -0.27 | 0.05 | 0.55 | 0.71 | 11 | 101 | 45 | 0.16 | 0.16 | 0.00 | Doug Fister | | WAS | SP | 31 | | 198.9 | 203 | 80 | 74 | 37 | 134 | 17 | 3.34 | 14 | 0 | 1.20 | 20 | 0.93 | -0.50 | -0.01 | 0.05 | -0.13 | 0.64 | 11 | 105 | 49 | 0.14 | 0.14 | 0.00 | Andrew Cashner | | SD | SP | 31 | | 189.7 | 166 | 78 | 72 | 60 | 153 | 15 | 3.41 | 13 | 0 | 1.19 | 20 | 0.52 | -0.50 | -0.19 | 0.12 | 0.27 | 0.60 | 11 | 107 | 51 | 0.11 | 0.11 | 0.00 | Ervin Santana | | MIN | SP | 32 | | 210.0 | 199 | 89 | 82 | 58 | 173 | 20 | 3.51 | 12 | 0 | 1.23 | 21 | 0.47 | -0.50 | -0.48 | -0.21 | 0.68 | 0.68 | 12 | 112 | 56 | 0.09 | 0.09 | 0.00 | Brandon McCarthy | | LAD | SP | 31 | | 189.7 | 202 | 78 | 72 | 29 | 144 | 21 | 3.41 | 13 | 0 | 1.22 | 20 | 0.65 | -0.50 | -0.19 | -0.12 | 0.08 | 0.60 | 12 | 118 | 58 | 0.07 | 0.07 | 0.00 | Dellin Betances | | NYY | RP | 67 | | 67.2 | 39 | 14 | 13 | 22 | 101 | 3 | 1.71 | 4 | 32 | 0.90 | 0 | -1.59 | 1.91 | 1.40 | 1.08 | -0.82 | -1.58 | 16 | 154 | 78 | -0.08 | -0.08 | 0.00 | Henderson Alvarez | | MIA | SP | 31 | | 189.7 | 195 | 81 | 75 | 32 | 110 | 17 | 3.55 | 13 | 0 | 1.19 | 19 | 0.52 | -0.50 | -0.52 | 0.12 | -0.63 | 0.54 | 16 | 155 | 79 | -0.09 | -0.09 | 0.00 | Dallas Keuchel | | HOU | SP | 32 | | 206.7 | 212 | 88 | 81 | 57 | 151 | 17 | 3.51 | 13 | 0 | 1.30 | 21 | 0.62 | -0.50 | -0.48 | -1.06 | 0.22 | 0.68 | 27 | 262 | 154 | -0.53 | -0.53 | 0.00 | Tyler Clippard | | OAK | RP | 66 | | 59.5 | 36 | 23 | 21 | 18 | 67 | 7 | 3.19 | 5 | 13 | 0.91 | 0 | -1.53 | 0.46 | 0.11 | 0.93 | -1.53 | -1.58 | 29 | 286 | 169 | -0.60 | -0.60 | 0.00 | Kevin Quackenbush | | SD | RP | 72 | | 72.3 | 57 | 26 | 24 | 29 | 73 | 4 | 2.93 | 6 | 10 | 1.19 | 0 | -1.28 | 0.25 | 0.38 | 0.07 | -1.41 | -1.58 | |

Good advice, but I probably should have specified it's a ROTO league, which means punting two categories is more or less not an option. I'm not even sure it's possible to finish first, but I'd like to fight for a top 3 finish.
That said, you get 180 starts, which allows for plenty of streaming if need be, so maybe a stack on pitching and hope on some hitting breakouts is my best way. 0% Agree (0 votes) |
ahhh yeah no go in roto... 0% Agree (0 votes) |
Bumgarner will give you two elite SP, and your hitters have some upside so I would think you could compete. I would simply attempt to complete in all 10 cats, but if you felt you needed a twist, you could punt SB (probably want to limit punting to 1). Is your league typically on top of the good OBP guys, or do they draft as if it's a normal 5x5? 0% Agree (0 votes) |
This is my first time in this league, though I play in basketball with half of them and they tend to miss some stuff. 0% Agree (0 votes) |
