12 team H2H weekly points league - I started the year with a bunch of SP injuries and Reyes was hurt.  Now I should be getting some of my pitchers back soon, but Harper, Davis, and Choo are hurt.  Melky is currently my best hitter.  Basically my team is a mess, but I lucked out early on and managed to squeeze out 2 wins.  I'll be sitting at 2-2 going into next week, but definitely think I need to bring in some more bats.  I have plenty of pitchers to move at this point since we only start 5 SP and 2 Closers per week.  Some deals being bounced around were Kemp for Bailey.  Kershaw and a player for McCutchen and another player.  Should I just try to stay patient?

Checking all of your teams, you're clearly the best in pitching and about to get better with Kershaw, For hitters, you're middle of the pack so pitching for hitting looks like the obvious move. It looks like 3B is a weak spot.

I'm good gambling on Kemp's upside for Bailey here. Don't think you have to make a blockbuster involving Kershaw just yet.

I just recently traded Aramis and Martin Perez for Bumgarner.  Left a hole at 3B, but I couldn't pass that up.  The Dodgers OF rotation concerns me, but at this point I won't be getting anyone with more upside for Bailey.

Do you have a DL or large bench to stash these guys so you can grab some short-term replacements?

1 DL spot currently occupied by Kershaw and 6 bench. I guess I could dump Panda (Arenado has been much better so far) and Salazar though Minor, Fister, Davis and Harper will be occupying 4 out of 6.

If I'm checking the right league, maybe Ludwick or Joyce can fill a hole for next week. They'll likely give you more than Davis has lately.

Would something like Minor/Cole for WIll Myers be better than any of the aforementioned deals?  Projections don't love it, though they're so heavily skewed towards pitchers so it makes it hard.

One more question: do you have daily or weekly lineups?

0% Agree (0 votes)
avatartomm0  4/28/2014 9:07 AM

Weekly which makes starting Ludwick or Joyce a little more difficult this week, since both will probably sit for a few games.  I couldn't get a deal accepted before our weekly trade deadline of Sunday at midnight.  I was offered Votto and Austin Jackson for Kershaw last minute which was interesting but didn't want to pull the trigger on that.  I'm really not sure what direction to go, but pretty soon I'll have a ton of quality pitchers with a limited number of starting spots.  Not sure if I should go with a big deal or just try to patch things up for the time being.

With your points scoring system, does it make more sense to leave some open slots for pitching and grab 2-start pitchers each week (or maybe that's what you're doing)? If so, I would have a short list of permanent pitchers and a solid group of hitters. Is this how you're approaching your team?

avatartomm0  4/28/2014 3:16 PM

That's typically what I've done in the past and what I had to do up until recently with Kershaw/Minor/Fister all on the DL.  I took Kershaw pick 4 overall and then found out about his injury 40 minutes into the draft so kind of panicked and grabbed more SP than usual.  Also, liked the value of Fister/Minor due to their injuries.

0% Agree (0 votes)
avatarken_admin  4/28/2014 3:51 PM

I would trade some of that SP for hitter depth. Cole and Minor are both better than Myers with your scoring so maybe you can aim higher. Possibly one of the slow starting OF such as Holliday or Heyward?

avatartomm0  4/28/2014 4:00 PM

That's definitely my plan, but I wasn't sure if I should try to move one of Kershaw/Bum/Bailey or Fister/Minor/Cole.  Hoping to get some more clarity on the Harper/Davis injuries and how long they will be out throughout the week and make a deal or two by the weekend.

How do you feel about Bumgarner and Reyes for Cutch?  I keep Kershaw, and can grab Aybar or Alcides off the wire who have both been playing well lately.

That looks pretty even plus you gain some reliability with McCutchen over Reyes. We have Aybar projected higher than Escobar, but they're not too far apart.

How would you guys suggest I compare Pitcher vs. Hitter trade values in season?  Knowing the majority of guys in my league it will take Bumgarner to get most of the names on this list if not Kershaw.  I guess I should compare per game values of Hitters * 6 or 7 (games per week) compared to SP per game values?  Is there any way to easily normalize that for comparison?

My SPs looke like this ROS:

What you are suggesting is the easiest way to compare. An offensive player's per-game mark * 6.35 should be roughly equal to their typical weekly output.

Since I'm sure everyone is wondering (big smile).. I ended up trading Bailey for Kemp.  Figured it was worth the upside, though I probably sold low on Bailey.  I definitely have the pitching to make up for it.  Trying to figure out if there's anything else I need to do at the moment or if I should just see how things go for a few weeks with Kershaw/Minor/Fister all back.  I still have a surplus at SP since we only start 5 SP per week.  Probably best to try a 2 for 1 including a pitcher to upgrade somewhere.  Arenado might be a good sell high, but I got him in the second to last round which could be a nice keeper for next year (can keep one player drafted in the 8th round or later who was on your roster the entire year for the following season).

MadBum and Kendrick for Freeman ?

avatarken_admin  5/9/2014 7:26 AM

Looking at what Matt said, Freeman * 6.35 would be 18.22. If you assume 33 starts for a top pitcher, that would be an average of about 1.2 starts per week. Bumgarner * 1.2 = 18.6. That would make them pretty close. Can you do Bumgarner for Freeman, and do you have space for another 1B?

Not sure how much value Loney will hold rest of the way.  We have a U slot though so Freeman and Davis could both be in my lineup.

Kendrick would need to be replaced using a waiver? If so, would it need to be a 2B, or can you use Carpenter at 2B?

So you can replace Kendick off waivers with any position? If so, are there decent enough options to make the trade overall helpful?

Well I have been running Kendrick out there as my Utility player because he's been hot, but Freeman would replace him there.  I could use it as a streaming spot since my lineup would then be set and I would be losing Bum.

Yes, I should have been able to figure that out since you're trading 1 hitter for 1 hitter.

Tough call now.  It seems like something along the lines of Bumgarner and Alex Gordon/Melky for Braun or Ellsbury could also be in play.  Not sure if I like either of those more or less than Bum and Howie for Freeman.

Freeman looks like the most stable of those options.

Think Bumgarner, Melky, and Carpenter for McCutchen is giving up too much?  I guess I could ask for whoever this guy would be dropping in return as well.

I think you are giving up entirely too much.  Bumgarner is projected for basically the same points as McCutchen... what are you actually gaining in this deal by including 2 extra players??

It seems to me like you are losing close to 600 points worth of batters so that you can move your Bumgarner points... into your lineup.  2-1 or 3-1 deals in points leagues are weird, and you really have to be getting a considerably better player in return for it to work out in your favor.

I wouldn't expect that you can actually get a considerably "better enough" player for Bumgarner PLUS someone else, he's pretty good.  If you put Cole/Minor/Kennedy in place of Bumgarner, then you have more room to work with, and something to actually gain from the deal.

Biggest issue is we only start 5 SP a week, so I have a number of solid starters on my bench most weeks.  On top of that I don't much room to stream any 2 start pitchers because it would be a tough decision starting them over most of these guys as well.

Can you afford to give up the two 2B?

I'd still have Kendrick if I did the most recent deal.  Seems like a package of Bum/Carpenter/Melky would be able to get me some decent returns.  Carpenter's projections have dropped a good amount recently and Melky is due for some regression.  Might be able to bring in Freeman, Bruce, and another or McCutchen and some additional pieces from a different owner.

Looking at this right now.  Like getting CarGo but not sure how much I like the deal overall.  Howie would replace Carpenter at 2B, CarGo replaces Melky, and Eaton moves into my U spot or I can stream a bat each week.

If, as discussed below, each hitter's weekly value is per-game value x 6.35 and each pitcher per-game x 6.35, here's the weekly values:

Richards & CarGo: 34.2 (12.36 x 1.2 + 3.05 x 6.35)

Bumgarner, Cabrera, Carpenter: 52.2 (15.63 x 1.2 + 2.76 x 6.35 + 2.51 x 6.35)

This leaves a weekly difference of 18.0 which you need to replace with a FA hitter or Eaton in your case. So you need a hitter who averages 2.83 (18.0/6.35). I'm assuming Eaton doesn't give this value, and you're unlikely to find a FA with this value. In this case, I think you're giving too much.

None of these offers I've posted here have ever been offered to me.  I'm always the one making the offers, but these guys don't accept anything.  Kershaw might be the only pitcher I could start offering that would make people willing to deal.  So frustrating

This is being discussed.  It's been nearly impossible to bring a bat in.  Think this is worth it or should I aim for at least one 3.0+ per game value bat in return for Kershaw?

What's the best you can do for Kershaw straight up? To gauge his value in your league, it would be good to know what level of hitter you can get for the league's best pitcher. Where did you draft him?

4th overall (Goldy was kept and Cutch went 3rd) 40 minutes before news broke about his back injury.  Everyone seems content with their teams except me so it's hard to say.

With your scoring, the following would be good hitters to target: Tulo (hard to get at the moment), Bautista, McCutchen, Pujols, Puig, Kinsler, and Stanton.

If you want to aim lower, the following are bargains with your settings: Victorino, Cuddyer, Crisp, Calhoun, and Lowrie. Obviously, you would not offer Kershaw for these guys, but maybe you can build the bottom of your hitters rather than the top if there are no good deals for Kershaw.

Surprised to see Victorino and Crisp's per game values so high, but I assume it is because they don't strike out much.  I'll try to sniff the market some more and maybe just sit back and hope something comes and finds me instead of trying to be so proactive and hands on.

Ideally I hang on to Kershaw and move Bum + a bat for a better bat, but nobody seems interested in him.  Maybe because I traded Martin Perez and Aramis for him a few weeks back? big smile

I think it is to much. I just got lucky and grabbed Tulo for Kipnis, Balfour and A.Cabrera....not sure how I pulled that of but I did. Most we value a lot higher though. Would do Kershaw straight up if I had the depth, maybe.

Here's his team.  See any way to sweeten this up a bit?

Kershaw & Reyes: 39.02 (17.54 x 1.2 + 2.83 x 6.35)
Tulo: 21.46 (3.38 x 6.35)

Though this also opens up a SP slot for me each week for one of the guys who has been on my bench or for a solid 2 start SP.

With your settings, this trade works. If you're willing to invest the $1/week on a 2-start pitcher, you can come close to Kershaw's value most weeks. A healthy Tulo is one of the top players in the league, and even though he's rarely healthy all season, compared to Reyes, I like his chances. You can also look into trading Tulo later in the season since he's clearly the best SS, and everyone else would see him as an big upgrade.

Thoughts on rolling with Britton or Mejia as a SP?  I know this strategy makes sense the other way around (plugging starting pitchers into your RP slots), but closers have been doing well with saves being the same number of points as wins (6).  I guess it depends on how permanent their roles are right?  Britton should see more opportunities than Mejia.

Between the two, Britton looks more appealing. He's pitched well and will get some short-term save opps. BAL's current closer, Hunter (back in a week), has a 6.06 ERA so his job is far from safe too. Mejia is getting save chances, but his other numbers aren't very impressive.

This was offered verbally, but assume I would have to accept if it came through.  I think it would be a nice compliment to the Tulo deal as well.  Only wrinkle is Arenado would be available as a 22nd (out of 23) round keeper* next season.  Probably too soon to be worrying about keepers, but I have Kluber (20th) and Melky (19th) as other options as well.

* Can keep 1 player drafted in the 8th round or later who was on your team for the entire season

We have Machado and Arenado close in value the rest of the way. Machado hasn't been very good since returning, and Arenado is about as cold as you can be so we still see them as similar options. Is the goal of the trade to give more value this season to get Arenado as a keeper next year, or were you hoping his value would be a lot higher than Machado this season?

avatartomm0  5/23/2014 12:53 PM

Well by trading away Arenado he would no longer be keeper elligible.  I figured if I end up moving Kershaw and Reyes for Tulo then I could do this other deal and have a 3B with similar value along with a quality SP who is due back soon.  The only keeper element would be I would have to choose someone other than Arenado for next year.

Sorry about that; I thought you were getting Arenado. If you're the one trading him, that looks good to me with Latos back shortly.

Ended up pulling the trigger for Tulo.  I still think my lineup could use some help though.

What would the suggested weekly multiplier be for closers?  Probably much harder to distinguish compared to the 6.35 for hitters and 1.2 for SP.

Very hard to get a consistent value, but I think 2.5x is a good estimate. For example, we have Uehara projected at 3.0 games next week, and he's an elite closer. The average would come closer to 2.5.

Thanks kslight.  Happy Memorial Day Weekend by the way.  Just got offered this.  I don't think I could afford to lose Bum after moving Kershaw, and also kinda scared about Votto's injury.  Definitely intriguing though.  Howie to 2nd, Carpenter to 3rd with the Arenado injury.  Bruce replaces Gordon and Votto to Util.  Any additional thoughts?

Using your 6.35 and 1.2 multipliers (using per-game), you're getting 29.54 and giving 29.96 so it's fairly equal. Sandoval's perceived value is high at the moment so you could probably do better waiting a week or so since he'll cool off at some point.

Springer - 2.55 * 6.35 = 16.19
Bumgarner - 15.81 * 1.2 = 18.97

Not THAT far off lol, but yeah I don't think I could do it

Lol yeah another great start.  I wanted to roll with Mejia in one of my 5 SP spots assuming he'd be just as good as most one start pitchers most weeks, but I can't get much for any of my arms.  Everyone seems to have decent SP at the moment.

Hopefully Tulo doesn't have many more weeks like this one.. A guy is throwing Votto and Beltran at me.  Neither's injury situation has much clarity though

This was offered to me.  Like the upgrade overall from Davis to Jones, however it would create a big hole at first.  Lind is available on the wire.  This guy also has Howard and Dunn so I could try to get one of them in on the deal as well.  Votto is also available from another owner but his status still isn't clear and Laroche might also be available.

If you can manage giving up the 1B, the deal looks good. Jones hasn't been great this year, but with your scoring, he's a better bet than Davis. Also, Jones is about as healthy as they come. For 1B, Lind is OK, but he doesn't play every day which doesn't help with your weekly scoring. Are there any 1B available that play every day?

Moreland, Duda, and Ike.  Might be able to throw in Howie for Howard and hope to grab Morales if he gets signed.  What would you be willing to give up for Votto ?

0% Agree (0 votes)
avatarken_admin  6/1/2014 5:50 PM

Lind looks better than those options. Morales is interesting since he should be signed by next week with NYY, MIL, BAL, or SEA. Votto looks to be 5-10 days away, and he's a risk to get reinjured this season so his value is likely at a low. If you need to take a chance, he's worth making an offer for. I doubt you could get him for anything less than one of your top three hitters or maybe Bruce.

He'd probably still do the deal after Votto was back so no need to make the deal now.

Got offered Moss for Harper and Cole.  I'm in first place in my division at the moment, but Moss would be a nice upgrade over Dickerson or Singleton at U.  What do you guys think?

Not sure I see a reason for you to do this as a first-place team. Sure, Moss is an upgrade, but so is Harper and you don't have to give up Cole in the exchange. I'd be more concerned about having the best team possibe at the end of the season, and a healthy Harper/Cole is likely better than Moss and the SP you'd add off waivers.

That Kershaw and Reyes deal for Tulo might have been the downfall of my entire season

Got Harper and Arenado coming back soon, so I'm looking to make some room.  This guy has some interest in Choo and/or Kemp.  Suggested pitcher targets?  Not sure he does Zimmerman, but think Dickey or Richards are worth it?

Now he wants Melky for Zimmerman

100% Agree (1 vote)
avatarken_admin  6/29/2014 6:49 PM

If we use your multipliers, the deal is pretty even:

Zimmermann: 14.20 x 1.2 = 17.04

Melky: 2.72 x 6.35 = 17.272

It did seem with your league that it was easier to find pitching than hitting so maybe you're giving up more than needed.

With Choo, the projected weekly value is 15.17 which to me would be a fairer deal for Zimmermann.

How about Bruce for Anibal?  Projections seem to really like that.  Bruce's per game value is extremely low.  Coming off 31 and 22 point weeks, should I be selling him "high"?

avatarken_admin  6/29/2014 6:58 PM

We did adjust Bruce's average up some which helped his projection, but getting Sanchez for him would be a better deal than Melky for Zimmermann.

Snagged Pagan off the wire as well. Debating on doing both.  Harper takes Melky's place and I decide between two of Dickerson, J.D Martinez, and Pagan for my other two spots each week.

Both trades are not unreasonable so if your team gets an overall improvement, it looks goods.

Choo for Wood?  Seems like a solid deal though I feel like I'd be selling Choo short.  He and Chris Davis have both been frustrating to say the least.

Choo - 6.35 x 2.39 = 15.1765

Wood - 1.2 x 14.41 = 17.292

The numbers make more sense, and Wood should have a secure job the rest of the way.

Figure eventually closer/save situations even themselves out, but Soria has given me nothing the past 3 weeks.  Bad idea to snag Joe Smith while he's still the guy there?  Rangers just haven't been winning games lately.

For most formats, we have Joe Smith projected higher than Soria. Is that not true for your settings?

Soria is 1 point higher ROS.  Only concern is Grilli at this point right?  Both have been pitching well

avatarken_admin  7/4/2014 8:37 AM

Yes, it's likely Grilli will be getting saves for LAA at some point. When traded, the GM said "Whether Jason Grilli returns to the ninth inning will have to be determined by Jason Grilli." For now, we have Smith and Grilli splitting saves the rest of the way.

Thoughts on my Bum/Davis/Choo or Kemp for Stanton and Hosmer?  I included Choo and Kemp in the analysis, but I think I should start the offer with Kemp.

Looks like a lateral move overall, but I like the idea of moving the elite numbers from pitching to offense in the context of weekly h2h points.

Just got offered this.  Figure catchers are kind of a dime a dozen in 1 catcher leagues.  I like it with Ramos and a hot hitting D'Arnaud on the wire.  Thoughts on Liriano ROS?

We have updated Perez, and his projection is now better than what you had posted. He's been batting 3rd/4th and playing well lately so it would be hard to give him up for Liriano. If you feel comfortable trading Perez, I would expect to get more than that.

Wow that's a big bump.  Guess I'll be hanging on to him.  I've loved his production so far, I was just trying to get Liriano and that was who he wanted

Was just offered Jesse Chavez for Kemp.  Think Chavez gets bumped from the rotation anytime soon?  Seems like more of a spot starter while at home this season.  Thoughts?

He's been solid enough that he won't simply be replaced, but he may end up being rested down the stretch, given that he's only topped 100 IP in one prior professional season.

Considering what I gave up for Tulo, I'm not sure I can give him up despite his injury.  Kazmir would be a nice addition though.  What do you guys think?

Tulo will likely be back in 12 days so I wouldn't trade him away. Are you worried he's going to be in and out the rest of the year?

Colorado's trainer made it seem like he could miss more than the minimum.  I'm fighting for first place in my division right now, so I could use the more immediate help.

I can't recall if you have playoffs, or are you just trying to accumulate the best record over the season? Is it worth holding Tulo for when it really matters, or are you in danger if missing the playoffs?

12 teams, 3 divisions, and 6 playoff teams.  The 3 division leaders make the playoffs along with the 3 best records regardless of division after that.  I'm currently the 6th seed now, though could be tied with my division leader if this week holds up.  'Points for' is the tie breaker which I'm a bit behind in.  Considering I gave up Kershaw and Reyes for him (headbang), I'll probably just hang tight and live or die with Tulo.

That seems like your best bet to win it all.
